What Happens After Fertilization?
—When do you hear a heartbeat?
—What happens in the 2nd month of pregnancy?
—What happens in the 3rd month of pregnancy?
It is not just what happens at fertilization when a sperm joins an egg in the first month of gestation that is important for your adolescent to understand. Once they have learned about fertilization, it is time to learn about the next two months of development in the uterus. It is also incredibly fascinating.
During the second gestational month (weeks 5-8 gestation), the baby is described as an embryo. This tiny little growth is only the size of a grain of rice, but its organs are already developing. Also, the heartbeat can be heard.
The third gestational month (weeks 9-12) is even more exciting. At the beginning of the third month, the baby is about the size of a blueberry. By the end of the third month (week 12), the baby is described as a fetus and has grown to about 3-4 inches. Its organs are there and just keep growing larger from here.
I know this is an unusual topic to talk to your adolescent about, but it is just biology and they might find it really interesting. We want our kids to be informed and that means it’s up to you to provide information like this for them to learn. Keep your time with them to about 7-10 minutes and make it fun. You can also simply get the download and give it to them to read:
