Slowly Walk Through Puberty
*Talk about puberty along the way
*Let your child discover puberty small steps at a time
When I started thinking about how to teach topics like puberty to young kids, I was convinced the best way was to teach the parents and then they could teach their kids. I have a lot of respect for parents because I am one and I have raised two very special kids.
Convinced teaching parents was the right way to go, I dove into writing resources for parents. I wanted them to have all the help they needed.
Surprise! I quickly learned through lots of parent feedback sessions that parents desperately want their children to learn about puberty. But, many parents felt uncomfortable being the teacher. There were many reasons for this, but here are two of the most common.
- Most parents had not learned about puberty from their parents so they didn’t know how to teach their children.
- The topic felt personal to them and they weren’t sure how to handle the questions that might come.
I had selected the wrong audience! Many parents didn’t want a guide to teach their child. They wanted a great resource they could give their child so their child could learn about puberty on their own.
So instead of writing one great book for parents as a resource, I wrote 10 age-appropriate books that kids could read for themselves.
But wait, that isn’t the end of the story. Parents knew they needed to interact with their child at some point and they dreaded the “Big Talk.” I’ve found a way for parents to walk slowly with their child through puberty, completely avoiding that uncomfortable conversation.
