QUESTION 1:
My 5-year-old daughter wants to know where babies come from. How much information should I give her?
ANSWER
When children are young, it is best to give them simple answers to their questions.
One answer could be mommy gives an egg and daddy gives a sperm to make a baby.

QUESTION 2:
I am going to deliver a baby soon and my 6-year-old daughter has lots of questions. She wants to know how the baby is going to come out. What should I tell her?
ANSWER
This might be a good time to teach her about the vulva. Since she is young, she will be comfortable learning about this important female structure.
At this time, all she would need to learn is that there are two openings: one for the urethra on top and the opening for the vagina below. Explain to her that urine (pee) comes out the urethra and that babies come out the vagina. There is an anatomy figure of the vulva in my book I’m a Girl: My Changing Body that you could use to describe the vulva to her. She will probably be concerned that the vulva is too small but you can explain to her that it stretches to let the baby come out.
