How to Start Talking to Your Daughter About Anatomy
If your daughter is 5-7 years old, this is the best time to begin to teach her about her girl anatomy. She will likely have lots of interesting questions and she won’t be as shy as she might be in just a couple years as she enters puberty.
This illustration from my book, I’m a Girl, Special Me, written for young girls in this age group, is the one I would like your daughter to have in her mind as she learns about her girl anatomy. You can only imagine all of the great discussions you can have with her in the future just using this one illustration.

Here are four different brief topics to discuss with her over the next few months.
- Explain that the ovaries hold eggs that can one day become a baby.
- Show her that the uterus looks like a balloon with a space in the center. A baby grows inside the space in the center.
- It’s fun to talk about the funny looking arms coming out of the uterus. They catch an egg when it comes out of the ovary and provide a protected pathway to the uterus. They are a little like a covered water-slide tunnel.
- It will be interesting to your daughter that the vagina can stretch to let a baby pass through to be born.
Just 5-7 minutes is what I recommend for a good talk, and a fun time with mom. Just one point at a time is more than enough. I would suggest you begin by talking about the ovaries. That’s where it all begins.
