Celebrate Your Young Daughter With Talks About Her Changing Body
If you have a daughter who is about 5 to 7 years old, now is the time to begin special talks with her about her body. My description for the spirit behind these talks is “celebration.” Helping her understand how she is special as a girl is something to be celebrated.
At this young age, she will be intrigued about this new information and eager to learn from you. Keep the information simple and the teaching time brief; maybe 10 minutes. For this talk, I would begin with the question, “Have you ever wondered where babies come from?” The answer you are going to teach her in this talk is about eggs in the ovaries. This illustration from my book, I’m a Girl, Special Me, might be a helpful resource for you.
Have her put her hands on her hips and explain that the ovaries are found deep inside the space between her hands.
Tell her that there are two ovaries and they are very small. Even though they are small, there are lots and lots of tiny eggs inside each ovary. When it is time to have a baby, one of the tiny eggs grows into a baby inside the mommy. There might be a friend or relative who is pregnant right now and you can use that mom to remind her about a baby growing inside the mommy.
That’s enough for this special talk together, but just think about how much information you have already given her. She will likely think about what you have just explained to her and maybe ask you questions in the next few days. Keep your answers simple and not much more than you have already said.
It’s always a great idea to include a fun treat or some other fun idea to help set the celebration theme in her mind. We want her to look forward to these small talks with mom.
