As an anatomist and someone who has taught embryology for many years, I can assure you that by the end of the 5th week, blood is circulating and the heart begins to beat. This is only about 3 weeks after the mom has missed her period. 

It is great that these discussions are happening. Most people have very little knowledge of the development of a baby and yet just about everyone has an opinion. Let’s make sure your son or daughter are informed as they enter into the conversations.
