QUESTION 1:
My son is five and has been asking me where babies come from. What should I tell him at this young age?
ANSWER
Each child is unique, but most five year olds just need a very simple answer to this question. A possible answer is that a sperm from daddy joins an egg from mommy and that makes a baby.

QUESTION 2:
My 5-year old-son wants to know where pee comes out in a girl. How do I answer him?
ANSWER
The answer I hear most often is that boys have a penis and girls have a vagina. This implies that pee comes out the vagina, which is not correct. The correct answer is that boys have an opening at the end of the penis and pee comes out there. Girls have an opening in the vulva, the private parts between their legs, and pee comes out there.

QUESTION 3:
My 7-year-old son is too embarrassed to talk to me about his body. Do I just wait until he’s ready?
ANSWER
I would suggest you use topics that he will talk about and turn them into talks about his body. For example, if he likes sports you can talk about how important good eating is for the athlete. This could lead to a nice discussion about nutrition and the digestive system (also part of the body!). As you build his curiosity about his body, you can ease into discussions about his reproductive system and he is, then, likely to me more receptive.

QUESTION 4:
Is it okay to use nicknames for the private parts?
ANSWER
I believe we should expect our children to learn the correct names for the parts of their body and that includes the reproductive structures. By expecting our children to use the correct names, it sends a message that these structures are important. Although some parents are uncomfortable if their young children use words like vagina or penis, your children will be accurate and more informed.
