Learn All About the Amazing Body
Welcome to the Anatomy for Kids website!
This is Dr. Shelley Metten (Dr. M) and I’m so glad you’re here. This effort has been a long time in my heart. I started college to be a middle school teacher, but the study of anatomy called to me instead. I’ve now spent most of my career teaching first-year dental and medical students. I was always surprised when a new medical class entered my anatomy lab and didn’t seem to know very much about their bodies. I figured that if these students were limited in their knowledge, many other people were, too.
I thought it would be a great idea to teach anatomy to kids so they would have a foundation of knowledge early on and learn to make educated and informed decisions about their bodies. Then when my grandchildren started school a few years ago, my inspiration and dream to teach anatomy to children became a reality and I began writing the books you see on this website, and creating other resources to teach both kids and their parents.
What you’ll soon find on this website is age-appropriate, science-based information about the human body as shared through my books and other resources. I designed my books to be a parent-child learning system that you can approach together with your son or daughter. It’s my intention that a parent or other concerned adult guide their loved one’s learning. I know that initially some conversations may be difficult or awkward to have especially as it pertains to the reproductive anatomy, but I also know how rewarding it is to educate our children about their bodies because we are empowering them with information.
Upcoming books will include I’m a Girl: Special Me! and I’m a Girl: My Changing Body. Future books will focus on hormones and how they affect the body, and boys’ reproductive systems. I’ll also have books about the other body systems including the musculoskeletal and nervous.
Each book will have companion resources on this site with teaching tips, suggested activities, and parent support through the Community. In fact, please feel free to ask any questions you might have in the Community section, and I’ll always be sure to answer.
I look forward to what’s to come with this website and the entire Anatomy for Kids learning systems and hope I can help you as you teach your children about our amazing bodies! Please stay tuned for the full website launch!
