How to Help Your Son Deal with Spontaneous Erections
I was sitting next to a 14-year-old boy recently and I noticed that he kept pulling at his shirt so that it covered the front of him. He seemed nervous about something and then I realized, he was preparing for battle with his penis that wanted to become erect without reason.
We underestimate how frequently boys in this age group experience spontaneous erections. It must be so embarrassing when this happens and there is not much they can do about it. You have probably noticed that young teen boys prefer wearing long shirts that extend in front, practically to their knees. Much of the reason for this fashion choice has to do with fear of a spontaneous erection.
As the reproductive system is maturing during puberty, it is common for boys to have these unpleasant experiences and they tend to happen at the worst possible times. The best way to help them is to inform them. In a 10-minute talk, hit these highlights:
- Explain that spontaneous erections are normal and most boys his age experience them.
- Let him know that his reproductive system is maturing and that the spontaneous erections will stop in a few months.
- Ask him if he needs some new shirts to help him feel more comfortable.
Our sons tend to solve these problems on their own. They are embarrassed and probably will not initiate a conversation with you about it. But a simple chat with him will put his mind at ease. It is particularly important that he hears that they are normal occurrences and they won’t last too much longer. This will be a great relief to him. Remember that even if he resists your little chat, he is listening and is grateful inside.
